From the publisher: Is our illness just a symptom?

Posted by Sep 14th, 2010.

This is one of those weeks where, there’s no gentler way to put it, I am tired of the sound of my own voice. (Join the crowd, you say…). So I am going to take a hiatus from my weekly letter. In any case, I’ll be attending an education conference Wednesday through Friday at the Aspen Institute, which will provide ample opportunity for mid-week blogging.

Meanwhile, here’s a thought for you to ponder. Over coffee Monday, an old friend asked me whether I saw any hope for public education. I answered without pausing to reflect on whether I was making any sense. “I don’t know, do you have any hope for our political system, or any number of other systems that seem to be collapsing or on the verge of collapse? It’s really all part of the same narrative.”

The more I think about that off-the-cuff statement, the more sense it makes to me. What do you think? Please share your thoughts.

    Alan,
Whether it makes sense or not, it’s where I am. School reformers are trying to fine tune a carburetor, but there’s a bad oil leak, the generator is on the fritz, five cylinders are blown and the tires (retreads) are peeling off…
