Pastor Vernon Jones, who waged a spirited battle for the northeast Denver school board seat (ultimately won by Nate Easley), has been named Denver director for the advocacy group Stand for Children. During the campaign, Jones demonstrated a real understanding of the issues challenging urban education. So it is good to learn that he will be playing an active role in Denver education issues. Stand endorsed Jones for the seat, and provided him with significant in-kind support during the campaign.
During the campaign, some people tried to besmirch Stand as an outside agitator and a front for Superintendent Tom Boasberg and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet. Nancy Mitchell debunked those myths convincingly. It looks like Stand is here for the long haul. And with Vernon Jones as its Denver face, the organization should become a significant player.
