[...] nice tribute over at GoBash as a “bad day for education reform”, as well as a call for a moment of silence from Ed News [...]
Nancy Mitchell of the Rocky Mountain News is among the best education reporters in the country. I worked with her at the Gazette in Colorado Springs, where she is still revered, and had the misfortune to go up against her in a beat that she had covered for years.
Nancy’s knowledge of education, DPS and the beat forced me to be on my game and made me a better reporter. Her work is among the best that the Rocky Mountain News published over the last few years, including the impressive “Leaving to Learn” series that chronicled why Denver children were leaving the district. The series still gets referenced in DPS board meetings. The year that series was published, in 2007, Nancy earned the paper’s Editor Award. John Temple, the Rocky’s editor, publisher and president, wrote at the time that “her daily coverage is as smart, fair and accurate as her project work.”
Journalism and Denver’s kids are worse off without Nancy Mitchell covering education in this city.
